Health: Are we really progressing?

According to WHO principal constitution of 1948, health is a state of complete physical (body), mental (mind) and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

In Europe, health during the middle ages was poor. Lack of sanitation, running water, poor living conditions and poor diet led to many suffering for both the wealthy and the poor people. Sicknesses like anemia was common, hence mortality rates following illness were high. You can still observe this happening in the developing countries.

To achieve good health, you must know what to do. How?

The state of complete physical health (body)

You must give careful attention to your body ensuring it is kept clean. You are responsible in keeping your hands clean all the time, cleaning your full body well with soap and water thus exercising hygiene. You do not necessarily have to use expensive soaps; you can use any soap cheaply available or choose an expensive one. Whenever your exposed to the environment, you easily collect dust which you are un-aware off as you do your day to day activities. This dust clings all over your hands and body. If you will be able to view your body under the microscope you will be surprised how much germs your body has collected.

For the body to stay healthy, what you take in should be put into consideration. Eating healthy foods full of balanced diet, fruits and drinking clean water, will keep away diseases that are mostly brought by lack of proper nutrition in the body. Proper intake of meals gives you energy, proper functionality and right thinking.

The State of Complete Mental Health (Mind)

It is important for your mind to be in good state. This means you do not overwork it, but it should not be passive as well. For your mind to be active and think proper thoughts, you need rest when you are tired. The mind will tell you when you are tired. It will signal you that it is time to rest. You should then obey it. When you do not obey the mind, you end up straining it. Leading to un-healthy conditions such as stress, anxieties and depression.

The mind needs to be fed with the right and appropriate meals. The brain is a vital organ of your body. It needs to function properly at all times. You’re eating habits should consist of meals rich in nutrients for the brain.

Nutrients such as Omega 3 fatty acids include Fish (Tilapia), flax seeds, kiwi fruit, butternuts, walnuts. Curcumin that curries turmeric spice. Flavonoids like Cocoa, green tea, citrus fruits, wine (higher in red wine), dark chocolate. (Fernando, 2008).

The State of Complete Social Well-being

You need to feel secure and have a sense of belonging in the society. Individually you must create that connection with others. Having a sense of belonging is a common experience. Belonging means acceptance as a member or part. Some find belonging in a church, some with friends, some with family, and some on Twitter or other social media. Some see themselves as connected only to one or two people. Others believe and feel a connection to all people. Some struggle to find a sense of belonging and their loneliness is physically painful for them (Hall, 2014)’

According to Maslow (1954), humans need to love and be loved – both sexually and non-sexually–by others. Health principals from the Bible to the Christian believers, speaks of having a peaceful heart that leads to a healthy body and compares jealousy to cancer in the bones.” Proverbs 14:30 (NLT).

What is having a peaceful heart? A heart that carries no worries, only thinks good of others, a heart that is not heavy with sadness – a heart with joy. Sometimes it is impossible to achieve all this at once. You’ve heard about we are humans, then, you are bound to worry and feel sad because of the many cares of the world. All the same, the choices you make in life matter and will highly contribute to your social well-being. Therefore, the state of your health will be determined by you paying considerable attention and opening your eyes to your body, mind and social wellbeing.
